Year of the Goat: Chinese Zodiac Guide (Goat, Sheep or Ram)

The Year of the Goat is the eighth year in the twelve-animal Chinese zodiac. The Chinese character for the sign, 羊 (yáng), covers goats, sheep and rams alike, so “Goat,” “Sheep” and “Ram” all name the same sign. It corresponds to the Earthly Branch Wei (未), a Yin Earth branch. Recent Goat years are 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015, and the next one is 2027, a Fire Goat (丁未) year that runs from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028. Traditional trait lists describe the Goat as gentle, artistic and cooperative. Treat those traits as cultural archetypes for reflection; they are not personality scores or forecasts.

BaZiCalc guides are for entertainment and self-reflection. They are not fortune-telling, medical, financial, or legal advice. This article uses no personal charts and invents no client examples, and a zodiac sign does not decide career, love, health, or money outcomes.

What is the Year of the Goat?

“Goat” is the popular name for one Year Branch, Wei (未), in a repeating twelve-year cycle. The cycle runs Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, so the Goat follows the Horse and comes before the Monkey. Each animal stands in for one of the twelve Earthly Branches, the same branches used in calendars, hour names and BaZi (Four Pillars) charts.

Search results for “year of the goat” are mostly sign-profile pages: a list of years, the five element versions, a few personality bullets and a compatibility chart. This guide follows that format, and it adds the details those pages often skip. You will find exact Lunar New Year start and end dates for every Goat year from 1919 to 2039, what the Wei branch means in BaZi vocabulary, why the same year can be called both “Fire” and “Water,” and how a year animal fits inside a full chart.

If you are new to the system, Chinese Zodiac vs BaZi explains how the popular twelve-sign zodiac relates to a full birth chart, and Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches covers the stem and branch alphabet behind every year name. For the 2027 year overview across all twelve signs, see Chinese Zodiac 2027. This page stays on the Goat itself.

Goat, Sheep or Ram: which name is right?

All three are correct translations, because 羊 is a broad word. Mandarin separates the animals only when it needs to: 山羊 (shānyáng, “mountain yang”) is a goat and 绵羊 (miányáng, “cotton yang”) is a sheep. The zodiac uses the bare character, so English writers pick whichever animal feels natural. Museums and stamps often say “Ram,” news outlets tend to say “Sheep,” and many astrology sites say “Goat.” You will see “year of the goat/sheep” as a compromise.

Neighbouring traditions made their own choices. The Japanese zodiac reads 未 as hitsuji, which means sheep, while the Vietnamese zodiac uses the goat for the same branch. None of this changes the dates or the branch. Whichever word you use, you are talking about Wei (未).

The character also carries positive associations in Chinese writing. 羊 appears as a component in 美 (beauty), 善 (goodness) and 祥 (auspicious), and a common New Year phrase, 三阳开泰 (sān yáng kāi tài), puns on 羊 and 阳 (yang, the bright principle). These links help explain why Goat-year greetings lean toward harmony and peace. They are linguistic and cultural facts, and they say nothing about how any particular person born in a Goat year will turn out.

Which years are Goat years?

Goat years come every twelve years, but each one starts at Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. If your birthday is in January or early February, check the exact start date in the table before assuming your sign. Dates below follow the popular Lunar New Year boundary and were checked against Chinese lunar calendar tables.

Two quick checks fall out of the table. The popular “2003 chinese zodiac” and “2015 chinese zodiac” questions both resolve to Goat, as long as the birthday is after 1 February 2003 or after 19 February 2015. Someone born on 10 February 2015 is a Wood Horse under the popular rule, because the Goat year had not started yet. The full year-by-year list for every animal lives in the Chinese Zodiac Element Chart.

What element is each Goat year?

The element comes from the year’s Heavenly Stem, and you can read it from the last digit of the Gregorian year. Goat years always pair Wei with a Yin stem, because yin branches only combine with yin stems in the sixty-year Jia Zi cycle. That gives five Goat versions, each returning every sixty years:

  • Wood Goat (years ending in 5: 1955, 2015): stem Yi (乙), Yin Wood. Folk descriptions stress kindness, flexibility and a talent for getting along.
  • Fire Goat (years ending in 7: 1967, 2027): stem Ding (丁), Yin Fire. Usually described as warmer, more expressive and more willing to take the lead than other Goats.
  • Earth Goat (years ending in 9: 1919, 1979, 2039): stem Ji (己), Yin Earth. Read as steady, practical and family-minded; it is the “doubled Earth” Goat because Wei is also Earth.
  • Metal Goat (years ending in 1: 1931, 1991): stem Xin (辛), Yin Metal. Linked with refined taste, firm standards and a quieter kind of resolve.
  • Water Goat (years ending in 3: 1943, 2003): stem Gui (癸), Yin Water. Described as perceptive, adaptable and inclined to read a room before speaking.

The last column of the year table shows a second, older system called Na Yin (纳音, “sound element”). Na Yin assigns one poetic element to each pair of Jia Zi years, so 2027 is a Fire Goat by its stem but “Heavenly River Water” by Na Yin. That is why you may see one site call 2027 a Fire year and another mention Water. Both are describing real traditions. Modern BaZi practice reads the stem element first; Na Yin shows up mostly in almanacs and older texts. For more on how the elements interact, see The Five Elements in BaZi.

What does Wei (未) mean in BaZi vocabulary?

In a chart, the Goat is the branch Wei: Yin Earth that stores Wood and sits at the end of summer. Practitioners attach a short list of standard attributes to Wei, and they are useful if you want to read the Goat as part of a chart and not just as a mascot.

AttributeWei (未)Why it matters
Polarity and elementYin EarthThe branch’s main element; Goat years are Earth at the branch level whatever the stem
Hidden stemsJi (己) main, Ding (丁), Yi (乙)Earth, Fire and Wood all live inside Wei; see Hidden Stems
Solar monthMinor Heat (~7 Jul) to Start of Autumn (~7 Aug)The month pillar of a summer birth may carry Wei even in a non-Goat year
Double hour13:00–15:00An afternoon birth gives a Wei hour branch
SeasonLast month of summerHeat that is starting to settle, a common image for Wei
Storage roleWood storage (墓库) branchOne of four storage branches with Chen, Xu and Chou
Wei branch attributes used in BaZi charts

The hidden-stem line explains a lot of what people sense in Goat archetypes: an Earth base with some Fire warmth and some Wood growth tucked inside. If you want the mechanics, What Are Hidden Stems in BaZi? walks through how those inner stems are read. The month and hour rows matter too. A person born in a Rat year in mid-July, or at 2 p.m., still has Wei somewhere in the chart, which is one reason the year animal alone is a thin description of anyone.

What traits are traditionally linked to the Goat?

Goat trait lists describe a gentle, creative, people-aware archetype, and they work best as prompts for self-reflection. Across popular sources, the recurring themes are fairly consistent:

  • Considerate and kind; attentive to comfort and to people at the edge of a group
  • Creative, with an eye for beauty, design and craft
  • Calm and patient, preferring cooperation to confrontation
  • Loyal to people they trust

The same sources list the matching growth areas: a tendency to worry, difficulty making decisions under pressure, sensitivity to criticism and a habit of compromising too quickly to keep the peace. Read the two lists together, because each strength has a cost. Patience can slide into avoidance, and empathy can turn into absorbing other people’s stress.

Keep the limits in view. Every person born in, say, 1991 shares the Goat label with millions of others across every culture and family background. The traditions themselves never claimed the year animal was the whole story. In BaZi, the Day Master (the stem of the day pillar) is the center of the chart, and the year branch is one of eight characters. Some Goat-year people will recognise themselves in the archetype; others will not, and both outcomes are normal. Lucky numbers and colours that sites attach to the Goat (3, 4 and 9; green, red and purple are common picks) are folk lists without a shared method behind them, so take them as decoration.

Which signs are traditionally compatible with the Goat?

Zodiac compatibility comes from fixed relationships between branches, so read it as a structural label for study, not a verdict on any relationship. Here is the Goat’s map using standard branch relations:

RelationPartner sign(s)BranchesPlain-language meaning
Three Harmony (三合)Rabbit, PigHai–Mao–Wei → WoodThe classic “best match” trio in popular charts
Six Combination (六合)HorseWu–WeiA one-to-one pairing, often called the Goat’s “secret friend”
Seasonal (directional) groupSnake, HorseSi–Wu–Wei → FireThe three summer branches
Clash (冲)OxChou–WeiOpposite branches; the Goat’s traditional “challenging” match
Harm (害)RatZi–WeiA lighter friction label
Punishment (刑)Ox, DogChou–Xu–WeiA three-branch penalty group in classical texts
Goat (Wei) branch relationships

Popular sites turn this table into romance advice: Goat and Rabbit good, Goat and Ox bad. BaZi compatibility does not work that way. It compares two full charts, including Day Masters, element balance and how all eight characters interact, and even then it describes tendencies to talk about rather than outcomes. A Goat and an Ox can do fine; a Goat and a Rabbit can struggle. If the mechanics interest you, BaZi Combinations and Clashes shows how these relations are spotted in a chart, and BaZi Compatibility explains how two charts are compared.

When is the next Year of the Goat?

The next Goat year begins on 6 February 2027 and ends on 25 January 2028; it is a Fire Goat year, Ding Wei (丁未). Anyone born between 1 January and 5 February 2027 belongs to the Fire Horse year (2026) under the popular rule. In BaZi, the year pillar usually changes at Li Chun (Start of Spring), which falls on 4 February in 2027, so a birth on 5 February 2027 can be a Horse in popular zodiac terms but carry a Ding Wei year pillar in a BaZi chart. After 2027, the following Goat year is 2039 (Earth Goat, starting 24 January 2039).

For people born in earlier Goat years, 2027 is their 本命年 (běn mìng nián), the return of their own animal year. Custom treats that year as one of extra visibility and change, and many families mark it with red clothing or a red string, a habit tied to the folk figure Tai Sui. These are cultural practices with real meaning to many people. They are not evidence that a benming year is dangerous, and nothing here predicts what 2027 will bring for you. The year as a whole, including how each sign is traditionally labelled against Ding Wei, is covered in Chinese Zodiac 2027: Year of the Fire Goat.

Born in January or early February: are you a Goat?

It depends on which boundary your source uses, so check one date before trusting any sign. Use this order:

  1. Find your birth year in the Goat table above and read the exact start and end dates.
  2. If your birthday falls between those dates, you are a Goat under the popular Lunar New Year rule.
  3. If you are within a few days of the start date, look up Li Chun for that year (usually 3–5 February). Many BaZi schools switch the year pillar at Li Chun, not at Lunar New Year.
  4. If your time of birth is close to midnight or the boundary moment, time zone and birth time can matter. Does Birth Time Change a BaZi Reading? covers why.
  5. When in doubt, generate a chart and read the year pillar characters directly. If the year branch shows 未, the chart treats you as a Goat.

Two examples show how much the boundary matters. A birthday on 25 January 1979 is still an Earth Horse under the popular rule, because the Goat year began on 28 January. A birthday on 10 February 1991 is a Metal Horse under the popular rule, because the Goat year began on 15 February 1991, yet a BaZi chart will usually show a Xin Wei (Goat) year pillar, since Li Chun fell on 4 February that year.

From Goat year animal to your full BaZi chart

Your Goat sign is the year branch of a chart with eight characters, and the Day Master sits at the center. A BaZi chart has four pillars (year, month, day and hour), each made of a stem and a branch. The Goat fills one of those eight positions. The year pillar is traditionally read as background: family, early environment and the broad social setting you were born into.

The rest of the chart does most of the describing. The Day Master (your day stem) is the reference point for everything else, and two people born in the same Goat year can have completely different Day Masters, element balances and structures. That is why “Goat” can feel accurate for one person and off for another. If you want to learn the full reading order, How to Read a BaZi Chart lays it out in five steps, and What Is BaZi? gives the short overview.

Common mix-ups about the Year of the Goat

  • “Goat sign” vs Day Master. The Goat is your year branch. Your Day Master is your day stem. They are different characters in the chart.
  • Jan 1 as the start of the year. The zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year (popular) or Li Chun (BaZi), never 1 January.
  • Stem element vs Na Yin. 2027 is a Fire Goat by its stem and Heavenly River Water by Na Yin. Both labels are traditional; they measure different things.
  • Compatibility charts as verdicts. Branch relations are study labels. Real relationships depend on people, not on one branch pair.
  • Sheep, Ram and Goat as three signs. They are one sign with one set of dates; only the English translation differs.

For the other sign profiles in this series, see Year of the Rabbit, Year of the Dragon and Year of the Fire Horse, the year that comes right before 2027.

FAQ

What is the Year of the Goat?

It is the eighth year of the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle, matching the Earthly Branch Wei (未). The animal is also translated as Sheep or Ram.

Which years are Goat years?

Recent and upcoming Goat years are 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027 and 2039. Each one starts at Lunar New Year, so check the exact dates if you were born in January or February.

Is it the Year of the Goat, Sheep or Ram?

All three. The Chinese character 羊 covers goats, sheep and rams, so each English name refers to the same sign and the same dates.

What element is 2003, 2015 or 2027?

2003 is a Water Goat (癸未), 2015 is a Wood Goat (乙未) and 2027 is a Fire Goat (丁未). The element comes from the year’s Heavenly Stem.

Which signs are compatible with the Goat?

Popular charts name the Rabbit and Pig (Three Harmony) and the Horse (Six Combination) as the best matches, and the Ox (clash) as the most challenging. These are branch-relation labels, not predictions about any relationship.

Is 2027 unlucky for people born in Goat years?

2027 is a benming year for Goats, and custom treats it as a year to mark with care, often with red accessories. That is a cultural tradition. No year is fixed as lucky or unlucky for a whole sign, and this guide makes no forecasts.

Is my Goat sign the same as my BaZi Day Master?

No. The Goat is your year branch; the Day Master is the stem of your day pillar. You can be a Goat with any of the ten Day Masters.

Next step: see where Wei sits in your own chart

You now have the sign-profile layer of the Year of the Goat: the years and exact dates, the five element versions, what Wei means in a chart, the traditional traits and their limits, the compatibility map and the boundary check for winter birthdays. The useful next move is to see the Goat in context, alongside your month, day and hour pillars.
